The Oeverpark

On the sunny side of the IJ there will soon be an attractive municipal park called the Oeverpark, a large, green sun terrace on the water more than 500 metres in length. On beautiful summer nights you can enjoy all of Amsterdam parading along the water. You can find peace and quiet or enjoy the busy waters. You can also skate, have picnics and meet people. A nine-metre-wide boardwalk with a footpath and cycling path will run through the entire park. As well, the open-air screenings of the Film Museum will be held in the Oeverpark.

The Oeverpark will run from the Overhoeks tower up to Shell’s NTC. Between the NTC and the park there will be a canal with reedy areas, which will be connected to the IJ. The park will be built on new ground. Along the current shore, part of IJ is being filled in, as works started in August 2005. In 2008 the park will be built and planted.

The park will lead to a common open space, which will interconnect the bordering neighbourhood, new residences and offices, and the IJ. From this green open space with trees and footpaths you can watch the ships on the IJ go by and admire the city centre. You will also find much greenery around and between residences: trees in the streets, patches of grass, indoor areas, and growth on façades. Overhoeks will be filled with greenery. On the east side of the Overhoeks tower, right by the ferry, you will see the Tolhuistuin, a garden currently used by Shell. In 2008 the Tolhuistuin will be accessible to all.
